Life is a series of choices and decisions that we make. Sometimes we are certain about the outcome, however most of the time we are clueless. Every factor of the universe plays into how a decision will impact your future. What would life look like if we knew the moment before? Have you ever been hurt and looked back on that exact moment and want nothing more than to return to it to change it? There is an odd time and space before a big decision is made. You are placed in the universe where time almost does not exist. There seems to be no feelings associated with this moment because you have the rare opportunity of freedom to change. You can change your life in two ways, continue the way or are or take the chance and change. I think about my decisions frequently even after there is no turning back. I don’t live in regret but I live in a world of what ifs? Perhaps this desire grows out of my difficulty in being different from those I surround myself with. I identify as a lot of things with my two majors, military life, and diverse cultural background. These three paintings accompanied by stopmotion, are reflections of the self projected unto others. Each painting is a captured moment before I made a big decision that impacted the subjects within the paintings . The painting represents the moment before and the stopmotion is then the living memory that plays out my decision. However, the stopmotion does not resolve or end. Because life keeps on going, and we choices and decisions constantly arise.
The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the work. I have been working in acrylic and marker and developing new language and dialogue between the two mediums. Each project consists of a painting and a stopmotion element, often in a range of different media, grouped around the same theme and meaning.
